Saturday at D'Agulaire Nat Park

Wild koala next to camp site

We slept well last night despite it being very warm, or at least warmer that we are used to when camping in Canada. Di and I are up around 07:30, get the coffee on and the kids are up 30 minutes later. After coffee we go for walk up the road. It is already swelteringly hot! Di comes along for about 1 km then heads back to camp. Not 100 meters on we run into a wild koala in a tree just next to the road, got a lot of good pics of him. We also sport cane toads, Kookaburra, skinks, bush turkeys, King parrots. After the walk we have a late breakfast/ brunch. The bush roads around here do not have culverts or bridges over the small streams. There is only a concreted section of roadway that the streams flow over, along with a depth guage beside the road so you can see how deep it is. In the afternoon we go looking for more animals and find a small Saw Shelled turtle at one of the creek crossings. The monitor lizards hung arond camp the whole day. They are like squirrels in Canada, just a lot more laid back and a lot quieter (Butters would LOVE these guys!). They will come right up to within 5 or 10 feet of you when you are sittiing quetly.

Andrew and Jadine are incredible guides for us here. They know the names and habits of most of the creatures we see. They also know where and when to look for stuff like the cane toads or platipussies etc. More important for me, they are great spotters and keep me from walking into a spiderweb when we go creature hunting at night. When the spiders are 3 inches in diameter you do not want them landing on your face!!!
