Arrival in Sydney - March 5

Dune Buggy Beach at Myall Nat Park

We left Dee's point camp at Myall National park this morning after I took a short stroll on the beach. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions. it is a designated dune buggy area. Nobody is up and around at this time of the morning but there are tracks all up and down the beach. We pack up and are on the road before the parks guys comes around to collect the fees. Score one for the Hunters!

We drive for about an hour before stopping in to check with the tourist information office to find out where to camp in the Sydney area. Turns out the local tourist locations are just that - Local. They do not have any info on anything further down the road. We poke around town and pick up some more mosquito netting for the van, then head down the highway. The netting is necessary because the nights to date have been in the 30's, making sleep somewhat uncomfortable with the windows mostly rolled up to keep out the mozzies. With the netting we should be able to keep all the windows open and stay cooler.

Camp site at Lane Cove in Sydney

Next stop is just outside Toronto. We have a line on an outdoor store where we can pick up a copy of Camp 7. The book is a comprehensive guide to camping locations all over Australia and is widely accepted as the best for finding economical, nice locations. We pick up the guide, Camp 8, the newest edition, and head for McDonalds for coffee (Macker's as it is known here). No luck finding any camp sites inside Sydney in the guide but I fall back on the Roughing Guide to Australia that I brought with me and it listed the Lane Cove River Tourist Park. We called and reserved a site for Thursday, Fri, Sat and Sun. We hit the road and it is a fairly direct route to the park. Thank goodness for the GPS!! The park is located 13 km from the centre of Sydney and has both bus and light rail service. We scored again! This is a great park, we have a nice treed site within 50 feet of the washrooms and showers. Power, water, a paved patio and great neighbours. The weather has also cooled off a bit so I know that we are going to have a comfortable stay here. The perfect spot from which to base out tours of the Sydney sights in the coming days.
