Melbourne - Mar 19

I may have posted this already but the Blogsy thig has been acting strange and it appears that I lost the Melbourne day!

Big 4 Camp Site

We stayed at the Big 4 campground about 10km from the CBD. The campground is pretty luxurious by our standards with apool, hot tub, games and TV rooms etc. the only thing they did not have was a reliable WiFI system. It is suprising how dificult it is to find any place to stay that has IFi that works. Our best bet continies to be coffee shops like Starbucks (although there are very few Starbucks down here.

Melbourne is an OK city but it is no Sydney (my opinion anyway!). Sydney had the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and Bay area etc, but Melbourne has no such specific attractions. It does pride itself as a foody and artsy city and seems to have a larger ethnic diversity.

Having a Beer and chatting with Brian and Barb

Di and I took the tram into the city. The tram system seems a little archaic compared to the high speed trains of Sydney but, they seem to work efficiently and got us down town relatively quickly. We got off near St. Vincent Hospital and walked over to the museum. They had a great natural history exhibit and an interesting section on Aboriginal peoples. Many of the aboriginal stories and cultural beliefs mirror those of our own first nations folks in Canada. We spent the entire morning in the museum before catching another tram into the CBD (Central Business District). All the trams in the CBD are free and there is a special route just for tourists that provides a running dialogue about the city. The same as those Hop on - Hop off busses but FREE! We strolled along the cafes and shops on the south bank of the Yarra River in the heart of the city, stopping for a beer and some tapas along the river front. We even managed to do some Facetime with Brian and Barb, even though it was 11:00 pm their time!

After the beer and food pick me up, we headed across the river and wandered around the streets. Melbourne is hosting the World Cup of Cricket right now so the streets are just packed with tourists. We window shopped and people watched until we were tired then hopped on our trolley, route 11, and rode back to the campground.

Words to Live By!

  1. Well, this is my second post. I made the mistake of bragging about how I now knew how to add posts in the appropriate place in the previous one. Clearly I was not as clever as I thought! Anyway, great to talk to you guys the other night (day). I've enjoyed all of your vacation except the sitting in the camper reading day. My claustrophobia kicked in and it just wasn't as much fun! Carry on enjoying!
