Travel day - Mar 31

On the Ferry

Another travel day today, we were headed north, intent on making it at least half way to Brisbane. In the end we succeeded, achieving well over half the distance. Since it was raining in the morning we were up early, packed up and went to Mackers for breaky. As it turned out it was a good day to be on the road because it rained pretty well the whole day, sometimes quite heavily.

Lunch was subway sandwiches at a roadside gas station/rest stop. We travelled to just south of where our campground guidebook told us there would be a free site. We plugged in the GPS coordinates and followed the directions. At first we thought we were heading in to nowhere. Off the highway, over a bridge, through the sugar cane fields, down to a single track! Next thing we knew the GPS told us to turn left in 200 m and "take the ferry"! Ferry, what Ferry? To our suprise there was a ferry, across the Clarence river, to a small community called Lawrence. The camp site was a pleasant, grassy park next to the river and war memorial. The sign said no overnight but we talked to a local guy and he said there would be no problem.

We got an icecream at the corner store and settled in. By the time it was dark there were 5 other campers there. The rain held off for a few hours which allowed us to relax a bit. The mozzies got bad around sunset but were pretty well gone within the hour. The rain started at just after midnight and kept up, off-and-on, all night.
